“I have to say I love Mississippi because my roots go deep here. It is my home. I love to travel, but I love coming back to the familiar.” smiles Meagan Babb, owner of Novel Paper. “I feel Mississippi makes for not so much distraction and leaves more time for creativity to thrive.”
Meagan has always known that she was gifted with the ability to draw. She recalls her mother, a high school art teacher, nurturing and developing her gift from a very early age. Meagan went on to graduate from Mississippi State University with a degree in Graphic Design.
Meagan’s first job after college was with Cellular South as their in-house graphic designer. Through this experience, she gained great knowledge of working directly with printers. “I was unofficially designated as the greeting card creator while there for employee birthdays, always looking to make them laugh though creatively I did not feel as fulfilled.” says Meagan.

“And this is where God opened another door.” smiles Meagan. Meagan was having a late lunch at a local coffee store when she overheard interviews taking place. In between the interviews, Meagan struck up a conversation with the interviewer and ended up landing the Display Coordinator position at a brand new store coming to Ridgeland, Anthropologie. “I knew I had googled Anthropologie’s home office graphic design positions 100 times a day previously dreaming and wishing I could move to Philly and now Anthro was coming to Ridgeland. Eeek!” says Meagan. She became the sole creator of in-house displays at the local Ridgeland store and later, the Visual Manager. “Anthropologie taught me so many things about business, people, design, creativity, and everyday it challenged me to be better than I was the day before,” says Meagan. “I still used my graphic design skills often and never stopped creating invitations or odd-and-end jobs on the side. In the back of my mind, I knew one day I wanted to do my own thing.”

Anthropologie ended up recruiting Meagan to open up t-shirt shops in college towns across the SEC. She relocated one store and opened up two more before the company decided to halt store openings. Meagan was offered a t-shirt design position that she just ultimately couldn’t say yes to. “I had grown too much to back to point A. I knew it was time to do my own thing, so Novel Paper was born.” smiles Meagan.
Novel Paper is a small two person business, Meagan and her husband, Todd. Meagan is the designer, illustrator and idea brain-child and Todd is the business and financial guru. Novel Paper offers illustration services, custom designed luxury paper products for our clients and a growing product line of stationery such as greeting cards, notepads, pencils, etc. “Whatever the design challenge, we will come up with a visual solution,” laughs Meagan. “With our new greeting card line, it is build around my love of puns, food and fashion.”

If you’ve been to any number of events in Mississippi, you’ve likely seen the incredible work of Green Oak featured. From the Sanderson Farms Championship to weddings to displays in Cultivation Food Hall, they do it all. What you may not know about Green Oak is that it is a family owned and run business.
Billy and Rita Martinson opened Green Oak Nursery in Jackson in 1962 after Billy graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in horticulture. As the business continued to grow it expanded into a greenhouse and landscaping and floral shop. Their children, Ginny, Karen, Chip, and Allen were always involved in the business. In 1998, Karen and her husband, Maur, purchased Green Oak. In 2005, Allen and his wife, Mimi, purchased Billy’s other garden center, GardenWorks. Karen and Maur expanded the business to include a wide range of horticulture services, including landscaping, general maintenance, Christmascaping, interiorscaping, colorscaping, plant rentals, and events. In 2012, Greek Oak opened its second location in Ridgeland.
Other families are also involved in operating the business. The McKie siblings, Eric, Carly, and Nic have all been involved over the years. Eric and his wife Carly James manage the Jackson location while daughter Carly manages the Ridgeland location. Karen’s sister, Ginny, is the service administrator. It is clear that at Green Oak, all the employees are treated like family. For example, Eddie T. James has been a part of the Green Oak family since the business opened in 1962 and continues to touch the lives of Green Oak customers through his vast knowledge and infectious, charming personality.
Make sure to reach out to Green Oak for any landscaping, Christmas design, wedding and funeral florals,

HUDSON: Autism Awareness

Niki and Jeff O'Quinn have four children- three boys and one girl. Their oldest son, Hudson, was diagnosed with Autism when he was three. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with Autism. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls. The O'Quinns had to learn more about autism after he was diagnosed, but Niki says that those times strengthened their faith as a family. On April 11, 2014, Niki shared the following Facebook message about Hudson for his twelfth birthday.
"I find it ironic that his birthday falls during Autism Awareness month. His life has blessed each member of our family in ways that I can't even begin to describe. Living with autism... I can truly say has been a blessing. If God offered to make Hudson "normal", I would have to say no. I want to be more like Hudson rather than him like me. He doesn't understand jealousy, hate, spite, or how to be mean-spirited... his mind isn't wired for that... instead, he understands how to give hugs, and say I love you and share the book or toy that he has in his hand... he finds joy in everything... vacuuming floors and cooking dinner... in going to school... in watching Hockey games, the Braves, guitars, listening to music, looking at maps... I think Hudson is more like God intends for all of us to be... selfless and loving to everyone... joyful in everything. I am thankful for this journey with Hudson over the last 12 years. He has definitely taught me more than I have taught him. Some days I wondered what I did to have God bless me with being his mom, that is truly one of the greatest gifts of my life. The days haven't always been easy, but the reward of knowing and loving Hudson is so much greater! So Happy Birthday to our Hud-man! Love you so much!"
Niki wants her message to be clear- having a child with autism is a gift from God. "Some of my darkest times were during this new diagnosis and all that it meant, but it was during those times I very clearly heard the Lord speak to me: trust Me, it's not for you to understand. And the rest is such a beautiful story," smiles Niki.
