{Tell us about yourself!}
I was born in Laos. I lived in two separate refugee camps in two separate countries for the first three years of my life. My family and I arrived in the United States in 1984 as refugee immigrants when I was 4 years old. I grew up in Northwest Arkansas, where my family and I became naturalized citizens; moved to New York City after college and worked in investment banking; and then moved to Mississippi in 2009. I have a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, a master’s degree in communications from Mississippi College and the CORe Certificate from Harvard University School of Business.  I have a passion for working with new and emerging companies on new products, start-up financing, market entry, market research, production analytics, and ownership structure. My mother often said I had the spirit of an entrepreneur. I co-founded Billy’s Original Foods in 2015 and manage product development and business development.

{Tell us a bit about Billy's Original Foods.}
Billy’s Original Foods is the answer to getting a homemade meal directly from your freezer. We are a start-up lifestyle food company that is set to change how you think about frozen food.

From its origins as a mom-and-pop restaurant, Billy’s Original Foods was converted over the course of a year to a full-blown manufacturing company. I co-founded the company in late 2015 with Billy and Robin Lieberman, a husband-and-wife team, who had owned an Italian dive restaurant in Vicksburg for about 15 years, and Cook Investments, who financed a part of our operations. The Liebermans built a loyal following in the area and knew that people craved good food and somehow wanted to turn the privilege of dining out into an option that can be easily accessible at home. The Liebermans mastered the recipes and I came up with the business plan and sought out buyers. We set out to make frozen food that didn’t have the infamous frozen taste because the idea of having good food needed to come easy. While we specialize in Italian-inspired frozen entrees, we also make a deliciously prepared Chicken Salad that Billy Lieberman calls his “Original.” The brilliant mix of this poultry salad leaves you wondering “why doesn’t mine taste like this?” As for our frozen products, the Meatballs with Sauce & Cheese have a sharply defined taste and texture that is dramatically different than its competitors in the frozen food aisles and the Lasagna with Meat & Sauce has been complimented as being “better than my Mama’s.”

Our secret that’s not so secret is that we do not add preservatives or any artificial flavors in our recipes. We want you to know that frozen food doesn’t have to taste frozen. Your taste buds won’t feel betrayed.

To produce federal standard and retail-ready products, we had to finance and outfit a USDA-certified food manufacturing facility. We commenced production complete with signature packaging and secured contracts to supply several large-grocery chains throughout a six-state foot print in the U.S. As a result of long hours, countless meetings, comprehensive market research, a well-developed pitch at shark tank like competitions such as the Delta Regional Authority entrepreneurial network and New Orleans Entrepreneur week, we were quite certain we could sell convenience without sacrificing quality.

{How did Billy's Original Foods get to where it is today?}
I have always been a fan of Billy’s food since I was introduced to the restaurant almost 10 years ago. I was the marketing director for the shopping center where the former restaurant was located and knew right away that Billy’s recipes needed to be shared. In December 2015, I left my job and became a part owner in the brand-new start up investing countless resources including my experience in marketing and finance to introduce the brand to markets outside of Mississippi. To ensure our success, I’ve traveled to more than 20 states throughout the country meeting with executives in the c-suites of some of the largest corporations in America (Walmart, Kroger, Lipari, and Target to name a few) in addition to smaller independent grocers. Ironically, I’ve even met in freezers in stores with temperatures below 32 degrees just to get the face-time I needed with a decision maker to close a deal.

{What has made Billy's Original Foods so successful thus far?}
We thrive off our authenticity. From production to the finished product, you can see and taste the authenticity.

{What is the mission of Billy's Original Foods?}
If you tell me that you fed your family our products and don’t feel guilty about it, then my mission has been accomplished. We are proud to make our foods without any added preservatives or added artificial flavors.
Picture
{Where can you purchase Billy's Original Food Products?}
We are the first Mississippi company to be sold in Target groceries and that’s significant! We worked with Target for almost a year starting with the initial application. We pitched our products and they immediately liked it. From there, it was a matter of scaling our production, customizing our logistics and retooling our capacity to meet the demand  of Target along with the businesses we were already servicing to achieve success. You can also find out frozen products in Kroger stores in the Southeast region and our Original Chicken Salad in Walmart stores in Mississippi.

{Can you speak to your experience as a female entrepreneur here in Mississippi?}
We are very proud to be a certified women-owned enterprise in Mississippi. As a woman in business, a mom, and a wife, it’s gratifying to be recognized in this way in corporate America. Starting a manufacturing company and building a pipeline from the ground up is very tough and many people told us it couldn’t be done. I’ve endured countless rejections, but have also celebrated the many wins. Almost two years into our venture, we’ve been able to reach several goals. In addition to Target, you can find Billy’s Original Foods products in Walmart and Kroger stores in the Southeast region, as well as independent stores in Mississippi. Some days are tougher than others juggling between home and work and home and work again, but the success of the company and the happiness of my family make it all worthwhile. I’m grateful for insightful business partners and a very supportive family. My husband, Tray, is my best advisor in life and work.

Women's Challenger at River Hills Club {Events}

5/23/2018

Picture
River Hills Club will play host for the 20th year to the USTA $25,000 Women’s Challenger, the state’s only Women’s professional tennis tournament. The $25,000 Women’s Challenger is a mid-level professional women’s tournament held in April. The WTA tour is set up with Tour Events on top, Challenger events, and then Futures events on the bottom and the four Grand Slam tournaments at the very top. “The Challenger Tournament falls under the USTA Pro Circuit,” sayys Dave Randall, Director of Tennis and Head Tennis Pro at River Hills Club. “It is one of about 90  tournaments held in the US and is the 2nd longest running active women’s tournament.”

Each year, 32 women compete for WTA ranking points and total prize money of $25,000/ “We have qualifying tournament the weekend before the help fill the 32 draw,” says Dave. “The top 20 women that enter get in automatically, then there are 8 qualifiers, and then the USTA has 3 wild cards to give to whoever they want and I have 1 to give to whoever I want.”

Since 2011, Catholic Charities has assisted with the event. “We help secure sponsors and we also work with Dave Randall and his staff to plan the special events for the week,” says Julie O’Brien of Catholic Charities. “We do Community Outreach for the event also. In 2017, we had around 60 kids from the inner city schools come to watch the tournament and learn more about tennis,” says Julie. “Many of these kids have never played or even been exposed to tennis and this is a great opportunity for them to learn about the rules of tennis and also about the life of professional tennis players. In fact, several kids from Rowan Middle School came to the tournament one year and because of their exposure to the tournament, they started their own tennis team!”

The tournament is sponsored by St. Dominic’s and Sanderson Farms and it benefits Catholic Charities and their mission which includes 23 different programs throughout Mississippi. There are many events during the week of the tournament and fun for the entire family including Pro/ Am events, Kids Day, sponsor parties, player parties, and feature matches each night of the tournament. All events are free and open to the public. “We encourage everyone to come out and watch some for the top women compete for the money. You could be watching the next up and coming tennis star,” smiles Dave.

Farmhouse Tupelo will be locating to the building above at 530 West Main Street coming this August.

“I’ve always lived my life with purpose, goals, and vision. I am one of those people who believes anything is possible and is willing to work for it,” smiles Bev Crossen, co-owner of Farmhouse Tupelo. “I consider myself a Jack of All Trades and I adore Farmhouse because I get to do all of the things I love to do: design, brand, paint, teach, network, mentor, and shop!”

Farmhouse, located in the heart of downtown Tupelo, is a boutique carrying incredible products hand-selected for your home. Filled with beautiful accessories, fine linens, local art, baby and unique gifts, Farmhouse also offers custom paint service as well as Farmhouse Workshops. Additionally,  Farmhouse offers classes on DIY Projects, Watercolor, Calligraphy, and Painting Furniture. Crossen is equally as impressive.

As a young girl in Roanoke, Virginia, Crossen spent her childhood camping, horseback riding and doing chores with her five younger siblings. “My dad showed me the importance of loving your neighbor and working hard. My passion for a project was cultivated from being my dad’s ‘assistant’ as a little girl,” says Crossen.

Crossen is adored by her community. The warm, friendly, and wildly talented Crossen was recently named the 2017 Most Influential Woman of the Year by Mud and Magnolias. “I realized I was the winner at the same time as everyone else did! I looked at the screen as the announcer listed honors and accolades and it clicked That’s me?!” she laughs. “I looked around the room, surrounded by a sea of wonderful women who do so much to give back and felt blessed to just be included. The only thing I could do was hold back the tears and smile as I received the award.”

Picture

Crossen recently hopped across the pond for an adventure in Oxford, England. “My English Annie Sloan internship was amazing. I was one of seven from the United States who was invited and it truly was a journey of a lifetime. Annie Sloan is perhaps the world’s most respected expert in decorative paint, colors, and techniques. She developed Chalk Paint Ⓡ in 1990 to answer the need for versatile paint that allows you to paint (almost) literally anything,” she says. “The opportunity made me feel like the luckiest person on the planet. I came back with a wealth of knowledge to share with my customers including color and design, fabric design, fun and informative DIY workshops, and upholstery training.”

Picture

With new lifelong friends from Oxford and the thriving city of Tupelo behind her, Crossen continues to grow her business. “I want Farmhouse to be the ones top shopping boutique for all your shopping needs. A place that feels warm and welcoming. A place that you can gather, learn, and buy the perfect gift for you or for someone else. I want us at Farmhouse (and Tupelo) to always strive to do our very best, to welcome all folks with open arms, and to always think outside the box to improve ourselves.”

Farmhouse hours in the new location will be as follows:
Monday-Saturday 10-5:30
Thursday till 7pm
Sunday 1-5pm
