Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience

6/11/2020

Picture
     Mississippi is certainly no stranger to incredible artists who have called this great state home. The Mississippi Arts + Entertainment Experience, referred to as The MAX, is the first museum of its kind to pay tribute to the wonderful culture and legacy of these artists. To name a few: B.B. King, Elvis Presley, William Faulkner, John Grisham, Morgan Freeman, Jim Henson, Eudora Welty, and Oprah Winfrey. After nearly 10 years in the making, The MAX is now open in Meridian, Mississippi. Using their words, we've listed every exhibit below with a full breakdown of what you can expect.
 The Experience:
First Floor

The MAX Hall of Fame Gallery is the centerpiece of the first floor of the museum. The eighteen artists represented in the gallery are the inaugural class of The MAX Hall of Fame. Touch screens and videos enhance the Hall of Fame Experience. A recording studio, two art studios, and a changing exhibition gallery round out the museum space downstairs.
Second Floor
The second floor is divided into six galleries that focus on influences on Mississippi artists, past and present: Land, Home, Community, Church, People + Places, and Global Community.
Exhibit 1 The Hall of Fame
Kiosks are arranged along the mezzanine railing and the ground floor. They will include stories about the inductees highlighting their Mississippi connections, how they became an artist, their work, and their legacy.
Exhibit 2 Introduction
Creativity spans every region of the state, every color and background, men and women, young and old, artists from the past paired with emerging talents. All reflect the artistic traditions and heritage of Mississippi. Come see a place that continues to encourage and support creativity and self‐expression.
Exhibit 3 Land
Mississippi art and artists are born from the soil, sands, and red clay of the state and see the land as a source of inspiration, toil, refuge, and nourishment. The land often encourages the first spark of creativity for many, whether artists work the land, travel through it or simply live among the crop fields, forests, waterways and towns. The landscape also generously provides some of the raw materials that artists use to create their work.
Exhibit 4 The Community
Celebrates the neighborhoods, cities, and small towns that supported and inspired the artists of the past, and continue to nourish the emerging artists of today. Explore where people live, work, play, collaborate and create. See how artists “cross-pollinate”, influence and energize one other. This section breaks into 4 smaller exhibits: Juke joint, TV & radio store display, town theater, school environment.

Exhibit 5 The Home
Focus on early influences and creative processes rather than an artist’s eventual achievements or fame, and reflect the unexpected connections and relationships of one’s place to creativity. Home celebrates artists in their earliest environments, where they were first shaped and inspired. This exhibit is broken into 4 smaller exhibits: front porch, living room, kitchen, and library.
Exhibit 6 The Church
Faith remains a vital element of Mississippi culture, community and creativity. Diverse religious traditions have given hope, sparked rebellion, encouraged social activism, and provided churchgoers with venues for artistic expression. The church continues to be a foundation that shapes artistic styles in music, literature, and performance. Church celebrates life and the life cycle, provides political and community forums, social gatherings and food. Church is more than just worship.
Exhibit 7 People + Places
Whether working alone or within collaborative groups, artists have put Mississippi on the map. Artists and their environments—in which they live, work and inspire one another—are front and center. Some area— such as Oxford—have evolved into important creative and intellectual centers, while more “hardscrabble” environments—like Parchman Prison—spawn creativity from labor, sweat, and dirt.
Exhibit 8 The Global Community
Explore Mississippi’s rich artistic contributions and creative impact on art & artists worldwide. Through reality or stereotype, the distinct characteristics of Mississippi have permeated our international creative and popular culture, and in literature, music, food, film, television, fine arts, craft traditions, and performance. Here Mississippi reveals its lasting creative influence on artists across the globe. The area will make connections, start dialogues, encourage relationships, and showcase the breadth of Mississippi’s creative power.

Kate & Caleb {Wedding}

6/9/2020

Picture
     Kate Bass and Caleb Poe met through mutual friends while both in Starkville. It was love at first sight after Caleb came and introduced himself. "I knew there was something special about him and I can remember telling my best friend a few weeks later that I was going to marry him one day," laughs Kate. Kate loved the entire engagement time from dress shopping, to planning or simple being able to tell people she was engaged! The amazing team of vendors fully transformed the Clarksdale Country Club with every detail done to perfection. "I loved seeing everything come together at the end. It was exactly what I pictured and it made all of the planning process so worth it!"

ELISHA & JUSTIN TURNER {LIFE STORY}

6/4/2020

      Dr. Justin Turner and his wife, Elisha, have dedicated their lives to advocating for the Jackson community. Justin and Elisha believe that bettering the community begins with bettering individuals. Through Dr. Turner’s clinic, Turner Care LLC, and the partner, non-profit organization 4everCaring, the Turners are making impact after impact on the lives of many across the Jackson community.
       Dr. Turner is the CEO of Turner Care, a medical clinic that takes a nontraditional approach to wellness. “Time. Time is the biggest thing that sets Turner Care apart from other medical practices. I believe that treating patients involves so much more than what can be accomplished in the small amount of time allocated to each patient that is typical in many medical practices. My goal is to know my patient, and knowing the patient takes time. After all, if I don’t know my patient, I’m just seeing the disease, not the person,” says Dr. Turner.
      At Turner Care, the approach is totally patient centered. The caretakers at Turner Care focus on a patient’s physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and financial health. The result is an all-encompassing treatment plan that works to better every aspect of the individual. “There’s a strong focus on education as well. In Mississippi, we rank the worst in health conditions like diabetes, blood pressure, obesity, and heart disease. Mississippians are not getting better because they do not have the education and the access to even try to better their own health. At Turner Care, we teach our patients what it takes to live a life that is healthier. This includes teaching patients how to eat right, exercise, and to view treatment as more than just the medication. Our goal is for our patients to be an exception to those statistics. We are helping individuals gain control of their health every day through education and guidance,” adds Dr. Turner.
     Like many physicians, Dr. Turner has known since he was young that he wanted to be a doctor. “I always knew I wanted to help people, but I was very inspired by a doctor who came to speak at my middle school career fair. He told us three things about being a doctor: first he mentioned the financial stability, second, he said Mississippi needs more black doctors, and finally he stated that being a doctor would allow me to give back to the community in a way that not everyone can. It was that last point that I found to be monumental and ultimately, my want to better my community lead me to where I am today,” says Dr. Turner.
    Elisha Turner has also always been guided by her giving spirit. Elisha is the CEO of 4everCaring, a non-profit organization based in Jackson. The overarching goal of 4everCaring is to bridge the gap in the community by furthering physical and economic wellness. 4everCaring offers affordable exercise classes. Classes include high energy options such as line dance aerobics, marching aerobics, and even tumbling classes for children. Yoga is also a favorite! It only costs five dollars to attend a class and 4everCaring is committed to helping those who cannot afford the fee work it out so they can participate too. “It is so important to me to keep these classes affordable. I have been in the position as a single mother of knowing I should be doing these kinds of activities for my own mental and physical health, but it never felt like a priority when there were so many other things to take care of. It brings me such joy knowing that kids are gaining confidence in our classes, their parents are doing something for themselves, and it is an expense that is manageable and totally worth it,” says Elisha.
      4everCaring does more than just provide affordable exercise classes to the Jackson community. Financial wellness through education is a cornerstone to the organization’s mission. “We organize free money management workshops where we educate the community about credit and how to improve credit scores, how stocks work, and general tips for managing money more effectively,” says Elisha. “There is this amazing confidence that comes from learning useful things and being able to take control of bettering your own situation. I see that confidence come through individuals who participate in our programs and it’s incredible.”
      Dr. Turner is also passionate about educating his patients about managing their own wealth. “I encourage my patients to budget for their health just as they would budget for any other expense. Set aside 50 dollars a month to spend on eating healthier foods or a gym membership, that way you’re able to make your health a priority too. A small amount spent on preventative care now will result in far less expenditure later. I wish more people understood the value in taking care of your health on a daily basis, before something goes wrong,” adds Dr. Turner.
     Every year, 4everCaring hosts a Christmas Benefit Ball to benefit ten families in the Jackson community. Elisha finds families who are in need of extra help during the holiday season and makes sure they are provided for at Christmas. This outreach goes beyond gifting the family things they want for the holiday; 4everCaring helps parents gets jobs, assists with mortgage payments, and ensures that children get the necessities they need. This past year, Elisha worked with a family who was homeless. Elisha assisted the family through the process of using other community resources and helped them get back on their feet again.
     “I truly believe that our community needs to return to the village mentality. We should all be willing to help each other. 4everCaring is our way of helping those in our community become the best versions of themselves. If people are taken out of what they know and exposed to something more, they will blossom. By helping individuals in our community reach their full potential we’re going to create a stronger community, eventually that stronger community will be a stronger Jackson, and ultimately, a better Mississippi,” smiles Elisha.
