How Do I Get Rid of My Hot Flashes?!

7/21/2022

This Mississippi heat is too much to handle these days, and God forbid you have a HOT FLASH on top of that. Or maybe you are noticing that your hot flashes are just becoming too frequent these days, and its just unbearable. Well, our friends at Southeast Urogyn have given us some tips to help out!

The most common cause of hot flashes is menopause and, in turn, hot flashes are the most common symptom of a woman’s transition out of her childbearing years. Sometimes hot flashes last only a few years after you reach menopause, but it’s possible for them to last 10 years or more.

The intensity of these internal thermostat failures also varies widely. Some women may have night sweats that they barely notice while others experience major disruptions to their daily lives as well as their sleep patterns, which may also be disrupted in other ways by menopause.

When hot flashes burn out of control, schedule an appointment with our menopause specialists at Southeast Urogyn. There are effective solutions for hot flashes, although sometimes we must balance treatments against your other health needs. There are even lifestyle changes you can try at home.

The loss of estrogenAs you move into perimenopause and menopause, your ovaries slow the production of estrogen, changing the overall balance of hormones in your body.
The reasons this imbalance causes hot flashes aren’t fully understood, but it’s thought that the hypothalamus, your body’s thermostat, becomes hypersensitive to temperature.

While common, hot flashes aren’t universal. Some risk factors seem to be in play, including:
  • Being overweight — there’s a connection between body mass index and hot flash frequency
  • Race — Black women report hot flashes the most, Asian women the least
  • Smoking — cigarettes increase your chances of having hot flashes
Not every case of hot flashes stems from menopause. They can result from a medication side effect, thyroid problems, some cancers, or cancer treatments.

Controlling hot flashesLosing weight and kicking the smoking habit are two obvious solutions that may help, though they won’t likely provide short-term results. A strategy that may reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes is trigger avoidance.

Your hypothalamus might be overreacting to your body temperature, perceiving that you’re already too warm and starting a hot flash to help cool you down. Staying cool can help break this cycle.
Consider changes like lowering the temperature of your bedroom at night and layering bedding for fast temperature adjustment. Running a fan not only keeps you cool, it also adds a white noise element that could help with other sleep issues.

Dress in layers through the day so you can adjust for comfort, and add a portable battery-operated fan to cool quickly when a hot flash strikes. Food and drink can also trigger hot flashes. Caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods can all scramble your internal thermostat.

When home solutions can’t provide sufficient relief, our urogynecologists, can help. Hormone therapy remains the most effective way to get hot flashes under control.
We recommend bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) as the safest way to rebalance your estrogen levels to limit the frequency and intensity of hot flashes. Some women can’t receive BHRT for medical reasons. There are other drugs available if this applies to you.

Hot flashes aren’t the only symptom of menopause. Learn more about the best ways to handle your individual response by consulting with our experts at Southeast Urogyn. Call our office in Flowood or Madison, Mississippi, directly or request an appointment time from this website today.

Skin Cancer Screening- Belle Meade

7/19/2022

Thank goodness it's summer, and we're hoping that everyone is wearing their SPF. Incorporating SPF into your daily skin routine should be a MUST. You know what else needs to be added into your annual wellness checks? Skin Cancer Screenings! This is not a joke, y'all. It's so important to regularly get your skin checked to prevent skin cancer.

What is a skin cancer screening? A skin cancer screening is a visual exam of the skin that can be done by a dermatologist, like the amazing crew at Belle Meade Medical Dermatology!  The screening checks the skin for moles, birthmarks, or other marks that are unusual in color, size, shape, or texture. Certain unusual marks may be signs of skin cancer.

If you have a changing mole or skin lesion, especially if it’s asymmetric, has irregular borders, uneven color, a diameter greater than 5 mm, and it’s changing or growing (evolving), you should have a full body screening exam for skin cancers. *Routine skin examinations/screenings are performed daily by all the dermatology providers.

To help you prepare and make the most of your appointment skincancer.org tells us to follow these five simple steps.
1. Perform a self-exam and come to your appointment prepared with notes about any new, changing or unusual spots you want to point out to your dermatologist. If you've taken photos of a spot that has changed over time, be sure to show them to your dermatologist.
2. Remove nail polish from your fingers and toes to enable thorough examination of fingers, nails and nail beds, since skin cancers can form there.
3. Wear your hair loose. Remove pony tails, buns or hair clips so your doctor can get a good look at your scalp where skin cancers can, and do, develop.
4. Pack makeup remover to bring to your appointment and remove any makeup before your exam that the skin around your eyes is easy to examine.
5. Ask questions. This is your opportunity to get valuable advice and insight from a professional trained specifically in diseases of the skin. From explanations of unfamiliar terms to pointers on how to do a skin self- exam, your doctor is an excellent source of information.

Belle Meade has some of the best staff in the area to help keep you healthy and safe all year around.
  • Dr. Shatley has been very professional, caring, and personal, I trust her completely. She is very thorough about checking me for skin cancers and done a fantastic job getting rid of my forehead wrinkles. In short, I love Dr. Shatley! ~ BP
  • I am so grateful to have had Dr. Shatley recommended to me to look at a suspicious mole. She became my "go to" Dermatologist on that first visit. And on the 2nd visit I "happened" to mention how I was struggling with arthritis in my hand. She told me that she just happened to know a good rheumatologist who happened to share her office, her husband, Dr. McMurray. She brought him in and he diagnosed me then and there. And the rest, as they say, is history. I'm with them to the end. ~ Sally
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. It is estimated that approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. So get set up with an appointment at Belle Meade ASAP. Visit their website and call to visit one of their locations in Madison or Flowood.

Let's talk about Microblading

7/12/2022

The Lash+Brow Gal Studio has a multitude of skills that they have mastered over the years. But one service they offer that is so fascinating to us is microblading! This is a semi permanent form of cosmetic tattooing.  It lasts 1-2 years on average depending on your skin type. The results are a much more natural alternative to traditional permanent cosmetic techniques. Cosmopolitan tells us that this process actually hurts way less than you actually think.

What is microblading for?
Microblading is for anyone who wants to enhance the look of their eyebrows. Eyebrows frame your face and by making them perfectly placed and symmetrical they can truly open up your eyes and give you a more youthful appearance. Great for busy moms or working women with no extra time on their hands. People with trichotillomania, alopecia, or anyone who is simply unhappy with their brows, microblading is your answer.

How long does the healing process take?
It is completely normal to have tenderness and swelling immediately after or a few days after microblading. The strokes will appear sharper and darker the first few days and then they will soften and lighten up as the skin heals. For a period of 10 days following the microblading, Aquafor is recommended to be worn on your brows. Your brows must be kept dry and clean for the 10 day period. No sweating, touching, picking at or wearing makeup on your brows. After 10 days, you may notice the pigment fading in and out of color as the skin continues to heal. At 4 weeks, you will see your healed results. Between 4-6 weeks, you will come in for a complimentary perfecting session to fill in any areas that have faded.

Before & After Care
To maximize your results, it is important to follow the procedures listed below prior to your scheduled visit.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or over the counter medications that thin your blood for 2 days prior to appointment.
  • Do not take fish oil for 1 week prior to appointment.
  • Do not get a wax or tint during the 2 days prior to appointment.
  • Do not drink alcohol the night before or day of appointment.
  • Do not use retinols or aggressive exfoliation 1 week prior to appointment.
  • Do not get botox during the 2 weeks prior to appointment.
To ensure you have long lasting results, please follow the guidelines for aftercare listed below carefully.
Day 1:  Two hours after receiving your microblading treatment, wipe the brow area with a cotton round and distilled water.  Apply a rice grain size drop of Aquafor with a Q-Tip to the microbladed area.  Do not touch the microbladed area with your hands.  Repeat this process every hour for 24 hours, except while sleeping.
Day 2:  After the first 24 hours, keep the Aquafor on your brows at all times.  Apply the Aquafor twice a day or as needed.  Wash your brows with Cetaphil cleanser morning and night.  Gently wash the area with clean hands and dab dry.  Use a Q-Tip to reapply the Aquafor.  Repeat this process until Day 10.
During Days 1-10:
  • Absolutely no creams, makeups, or products besides those listed above on the microbladed area.
  • Do not get the microbladed area wet unless cleansing with clean hands twice a day with Cetaphil cleanser.
  • Keep the area clean & sterile.
  • No touching, picking, scratching, or rubbing the microbladed area. Flaking and scabbing are expected.
  • No sweating: this includes working out, saunas, steam rooms, spicy foods.
  • No sun on the microbladed area. After 10 days, ALWAYS wear SPF on the brow area.
  • Avoid cleaning dusty areas or doing anything that may risk debris getting in the microbladed area.
Day 11-30:  After 10 days the surface of your skin is healed.  At this point you can get your brows wet or use makeup as needed.  Your brows will begin to fade in and out of color and will continue until about 4 weeks when your skin is completely healed.
Between 4-6 weeks, you must come back for a complimentary perfecting session.  During this session, your brows will be perfected.  Altering the color as needed, going back over existing strokes, and focusing more on areas that did not hold the pigment as well.

It is important to recognize that everyone's skin is different, so your results vary from one person to the next. But check out some of these amazing results!
