Sunjay Chawla: Wendy's High School Heisman Winner {Life}

2/26/2019

Happiest of Tuesdays y'all!
Today we wanted to share the incredible story of Sunjay Chawla, Mississippi's first Wendy's High School Heisman recipient. Sunjay is the type of individual we can all find inspiration in. We are thrilled to be able to share his story with y'all. Keep reading for more!
Picture
         Over a decade ago, Dave Thomas, the founder of the popular fast food restaurant Wendy’s, established the Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship in order to celebrate the young adults across America whose academic achievements, drive, and athletic success set them apart from their peers. Sunjay Chawla is undoubtedly deserving of this honor and was recognized as the 2018 Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship winner, the first national winner from the state of Mississippi. The Pillow Academy senior is the type of individual who knows no other life but one defined by selfless service, determination, and passion.

    Sunjay’s parents, Suresh and Gauri Chawla, knew their child was destined for athletic success from the time he was a very young child. “When I first learned how to walk I was dribbling a soccer ball with both feet,” smiles Sunjay. Father and son bonded on the golf course and tennis court, effectively planting the seeds for a love for sport that would grow stronger as Sunjay aged. As a senior in high school, Sunjay is a talented athlete; his abilities allow him to excel at soccer, tennis, and golf. “My greatest accomplishment in sports is not even a big win. I finished third place in our state in golf. Golf is the hardest sport for me, and it was so rewarding to see all the hard work I put into the game pay off during that tournament,” says Sunjay.

        The summer prior to beginning his final year at Pillow Academy, Sunjay attended the Summer Leadership Institute at the Trent Lott Institute of the University of Mississippi. While participating in the program, Sunjay made the decision to take advantage of the resources available to him and get a head start on a long research paper required by his senior year english class.  He decided to research the biases embedded into the standardized test he had just done very well on. “I was surprised by how much information I was able to find. There is a significant amount of evidence that suggests standardized college admittance tests are biased towards women, minorities, and the underprivileged. That research changed how I looked at those tests. I am blessed to be fortunate enough to be able to afford all the resources I needed to do well on the ACT, but many in my community are not so lucky. I wanted to unearth those biases and make them known,” says Sunjay.

Picture
   Not content with simply acknowledging the issue, the high school senior was determined to do what he could to help combat the problem in his own community. Sunjay, with the support of his family, began hosting ACT prep courses every Tuesday and Thursday for students at Greenwood High School, a program he referred to as the Shawla ACT Institute. “My goal was to provide my peers with the resources I was fortunate enough to have when preparing for the test. The key to standardized testing is often repetition, but  test prep books that contain practice tests can be really expensive for some people, making taking multiple practice tests cost prohibitive. I figured that I could help these students prepare themselves by administering practice exams and grading them, and reviewing them with the students,” says Sunjay. This level of selflessness is not limited to this project, the teenager also hosts tennis camps, open to children of the entire community. “I have a passion for tennis and I am blessed to be good at it. There is no reason not to spread the joy the game I love brings to those who play it,” smiles Sunjay. During the summers, Sunjay will run drills in Whittington Park with anyone who wants to learn how to play the game.

       It is these acts of service, his academic performance, and his athletic success that made him the perfect candidate to win the Wendy’s National High School Heisman scholarship. His victory might have surprised Sunjay, but made perfect sense to those in his community who know him well. “Winning the Heisman award meant everything to me. I have made a lot of sacrifices to get to where I am. I have missed out on a lot of things because I’m studying or practicing. Winning this award meant so much to me because it reminded me that hard work and sacrifice does pay off. It has motivated me to approach my future with the same amount of determination,” says Sunjay.  Looking forward, Sunjay is sure that community service will remain an integral part of his life. “I am committed to the idea that with great success comes great responsibility to give back to the community. I am so thankful for the community I was lucky enough to be raised in. To know that everyone around me wants me to succeed means so much to me and I am so grateful for the support my community has offered.”

Floral Trends with Fresh Cut Catering and Floral {Insider Inspiration}

2/19/2019

Happy Tuesday y’all!
We are patiently waiting for Spring to come around the corner and bet y’all are as well. In the meantime, we got the chance to chat with Julia Putt about upcoming floral trends you’re sure to see this year. Julia is a floral designer at Fresh Cut Catering and Floral. The team at Fresh Cut have the incredible ability to translate the vision in their clients’ heads into reality. Everything they do captures the personality of their clients and results in stunning events. Keep reading to hear more from Julia about what the latest and greatest is in the world of florals!

{What do you think are going to be the biggest floral trends in 2019?}
I think pave of flowers are coming back in style in a major way this year! Instead of spreading your flowers through the arrangements, we are seeing brides choose collections of flowers within the arrangement. These tight clusters add a point of focus to arrangements.

{Can you speak specifically about upcoming trends in bridal florals?}
Bouquets have been far larger recently. We’re seeing more clients request bouquets that are horizontal in form and wild in textures. Brides aren’t scared to pop colors in theirs and have them untamed. I so love that the recent trends are stepping away from the traditional mound. I am all about some horizontal and cascading bouquets!

{Are there certain flowers that are going to be more popular than others?}
Most brides tend to love hydrangea and roses. No matter what arrangements we are doing, most get hydrangea. Deciding what flowers will be used in an arrangement begins first with picking an overall style for your florals. Your style will determine what your prominent flower is going to be. For example, if you are  going for a more organic style you would have mostly greenery with a few flowers, but if you are aiming for something more traditional you will see more roses and hydrangea.

{What are you personally looking forward to experimenting with this year?}
My favorite things to make are bouquets. I feel they are the most personal part of the wedding. They are with the bride every step of the way and in most of the pictures. Because of that I enjoy experimenting with those most. Keeping the personality of the bride while making them unique is my favorite part of floral design.

Picture
{What old trends do you think are going out of style?}

I think old trends are sticking to a traditional large arrangement on your food table. What we have found is more popular is a large collection of vases. As far as guest tables, instead of featuring one arrangement we like to hang the centerpiece. This may include a board of flowers, floral chandeliers, crystal chandeliers, moss balls, etc.

{Which things are coming back into play?}
Lighting has become HUGE. Whether its hanging bubbles over your dance floor or choosing to put up-lights or pin-spots around the room. It plays a major role in setting the ambiance of your reception. I like to refer to lighting as giving your room a face lift.  After all, without proper lighting it can be extremely difficult for guests to see the wonderful detail of your decor.

Picture

{What advice would you give to someone who has no idea what kind of flowers they want to see at their wedding?}
I like to start by showing them pictures. First step is choosing your style. Once we do that we move on to what colors and go from there! We love brides who have no idea what they like. It makes the process interesting for both parties.

Kate Schultz {Local Love}

1/31/2019

Happy Thursday Everyone!
We sure are looking forward to the weekend and bet y'all are too! Today we wanted to share a little bit about a local artist whose work leaves us breathless every time. Kate Freeman Schultz is incredibly talented and her pieces bring such a brightness to any space. We are so inspired by Kate's talent and think that y'all will be as well!
Kate Freeman Schultz’s incredible creativity becomes tangible when she transfers her bright visions onto a blank canvas. A Jackson, Mississippi native, Kate realized her passion for art while taking art classes in high school. “I wasn’t the best at academics but man did I love and ace every single art class!” laughs Kate. To develop her technique, Kate began taking private art classes from Bob Tompkins while still in high school. Under his guidance, Kate began working with oils to capture a broad range of subjects, from still life to complex nature scenes.  Kate graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Painting. Currently, Kate lives in Jackson with her husband and fellow artist Justin Schultz.

    Kate’s artwork has an undeniable joyful quality, making her pieces perfect for brightening up any space in your home. Inspired primarily by the incredible uniqueness of complex floral arrangements, Kate emulates the movement, colors, and texture of the arrangements in her paintings. Her pieces contain layers of colors and shapes that converge into a stunning image. Her work is the transformation of an ordinary subject matter into a complex depiction of depth and character. Kate’s work functions as a mirror for her passion, “art comes from the depths of your soul and can be so incredibly powerful. It’s a truly amazing way to express yourself. Art lifts me up and makes me truly happy,” smiles Kate.

.Though florals and whimsical botanicals have been her focus for the past two years, Kate has begun to explore painting abstracts that reflect the endless movement of water. “I recently traveled to Northern California for my honeymoon. I was so inspired by the water there. It was like nothing I had ever seen, the colors were breathtaking, absolutely magical!” Kate’s artwork is available for purchase on her website www.kateschultzart.com. Kate also does custom commissioned pieces by request. Keep up with her latest releases by following her on Instagram @katefschultz

Biggest Bridal Fashion Trends in 2019 {Insider Inspiration}

1/23/2019

Happy Thursday y’all!
We hope that your week has gone smoothly! We also hope that you’ve had the chance to get your hands on the newest edition of Inspiration Mississippi magazine! Make sure to snag yourself a copy when you see it around town.

Wedding season is coming up right around the bend and we are so lucky to have fashion experts on call for y’all! Audrey Jarvis of The Bridal Path, took some time to talk to us about the biggest trends of this new year! The Bridal Path, located in Banner Hall in Jackson, is the Mississippi bride’s one stop shop for everything bridal; from the gown to the accessories, Audrey and her team have you covered!

The Bridal Path is proud to carry a wide range of both sizes and price points to accommodate every bride. The staff is knowledgeable and will take their time to ensure you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself on your big day!

{What trends do you think will dominate bridal this year?}
    As you all know, the holidays bring lots of engagements! With the holiday season coming to a close, we’ve had lots of newly engaged brides stop in The Bridal Path with fresh ideas! Each bride is unique and wants a different look for their big day, but we have seen an overarching theme of elegant simplicity with many brides. After all, who wasn’t inspired by Meghan Markle’s jaw-dropping, boat neck, simple gown?
    Having gone to market this past fall, it was clear that many of the top designers in the industry were similarly inspired! I think we will see this trend for a while, and I’m not sad about it! Some specific trends include clean lines, satin and other simple fabrics, and eye-catching accents such as big bows, bold lace, and intricate embellishments.

Picture
{What about trends in bridesmaids and mother of the bride/groom dresses?}
     One change we have noticed in bridesmaid’s dresses are fashion-forward styles that are accommodating to all shapes and sizes have become extremely popular.  We love this shift to flattering necklines and fits because it is resulting in a bridal party that looks so chic!

   We’re also seeing a modernization of  Mother of the Bride/Groom styles. There’s a shift away from a traditional matronly look and towards a more classic, timeless vibe.

     One thing we are most excited about is the expanding color options for bridesmaids gowns. More and more designers are offering more color options; it’s dream come true! Lastly, bridesmaid dresses have become such a fun way for the bride to express her own personal style. The variety of materials designers are now offering make this decision a more unique one than it has ever been. Whether she wants sequins, satin, crepe, or lace, she can find the right dress for her best girls.

Picture
{Are there are any specific pieces you're really excited about having in store?}
    Such a hard question! Everyday we receive a UPS package, it’s like Christmas morning! One of our favorite lines at market this fall was the new season of Theia. We are especially excited to finally have those in the store! I am also excited to have more simple, satin dresses for good prices since those are so popular this season. We are also delighted to carry more size-inclusive samples so everyone can try lots of things on!

{What about trends in accessorizing specifically?}
Our favorite thing about accessories is the way a bride’s personality shines through them! As far as trends go, we are loving bridal CAPES! That’s right I said capes! They are beautiful because they give the dramatic effect of a veil and if you choose to take it off for the reception, you have a new look! We also love two-sided earrings and head pieces that coordinate with earrings. For our winter brides – wraps and pashminas give the most dreamy, wintery touch!

{What piece of advice would you offer to someone that has no idea what kind of dress they might want for their wedding day?}

Do not stress! It is usually best to come into your appointment with an open mind anyway! We will try all different fits and styles so you can figure out what you want amongst it all! I always want my brides to feel like the most beautiful version of themselves. This is the dress you will become a WIFE in after all! It so common for brides to leave in something different than what they originally wanted so, it is more than okay to come in having no idea where to start! That’s what we’re here for!

An intense love for family was also a driving force behind many of the planning decisions. "From the beginning, Borden and I always said we wanted every detail to reflect our personalities. Everything from the flowers to the s'mores bar outside was thought to capture a feeling of winter, the joy of family, and our pure love," smiles Hannah.
