Tomorrow marks “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” – the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. As the thoroughbreds race 1.25 miles around the Churchill Downs track, gather friends and family for a viewing party! You will surely impress when you serve them the signature drink of the Derby: the Mint Julep! This fine cocktail originated in the south during the 18th century, and is typically served in silver or pewter cups. It has been associated with the Derby since 1938!
{Traditional Mint Julep}
· Place a large sprig of spearmint in your glass, and muddle with simple syrup
· Add crushed ice
· Pour your favorite bourbon
· Garnish with fresh mint
**If you feel inspired to try something different, Aven suggests garnishing your cocktail with cinnamon spiced oranges!
For a sweet twist on the traditional mint julep, Aven also shares his recipe for a delicious mint julep tea you and your friends are sure to love.
{Mississippi Mint Julep Tea}
· First, make an easy mint tea. The mint tea is simply iced tea sweetened with minted simple syrup.
· To create the simple syrup, boil simple syrup (sugar water) with mint springs!
· Based on your glass size, add 1 part Bourbon to 3 parts Mint Tea.
· Add crushed ice
· Garnish with fresh mint or cinnamon spiced oranges!
We hope you love your mint juleps as much as we do! Aven advises that you use your imagination and get inspired! He even created the perfect menu to pair with your mint juleps:
Hot Brown “Sliders”
Grilled Asparagus Spears with Pickled Lemon
Deviled Eggs with Smoked Salmon
Minted Fruit Skewers
Smoked Ribs
Your Favorite Cheese
Petite Kentucky Bourbon Pies
What a way to celebrate. As the winner of the Derby is draped in a beautiful blanket of roses, toast your friends and family with a refreshing mint julep! And don’t forget to wear your finest hat. Cheers!
