Happy Tuesday, friends! We recently had the chance to catch up with the two incredible minds behind the Provision Project. Tucker and Macy Gladden are such an inspiration to us and we wanted to share what they started, their mission, their hearts and ways that we can get involved! So let's get started... Question: What is the Provision Project and how did it start? Macy and Tucker, tell us a little about you. Answer: (Tucker): The Provision Project is a nonprofit organization to help homeless people in the Jackson, Mississippi area. We got the idea to do this a few years ago, when we went on a trip with Mom to New Orleans. While we were there, we noticed how many homeless people were around us, and our hearts went out to them. We wanted to help in some way. (Macy): I always want to help anyone and everyone. On the way home, I kept bringing it up! We decided that there were people in Jackson that needed help, too, and we wanted to help them. (Tucker): So on the way home from New Orleans, we thought of things we could do to help the homeless right there where we lived. We knew they would need things for the outdoors, like blankets, thermoses, clean socks, clothes, food, and all kinds of things that we normally don't think about. Mom suggested that we call a local charity organization and see what was really needed, and that's what we did! We called We Will Go Ministries, who gave us a long list of needed items. We did our first drive which was very successful. (Macy): We collected hygiene products, new socks, clothing, thermoses, and white t-shirts for them, and when we delivered, it made me so happy because it made them happy! Question: What is the vision of the Provision Project? Answer: We want to be able to help homeless people all around Mississippi. Our hope is that we can inspire other kids and families to do the same thing we are doing. They can either join us in our collection drives, or find a favorite charity organization or cause, and start their own collection drives or fundraisers! We want to encourage others to act - whether it's with us or on their own. The more giving we can all do, the better off we all will be. Question: What/who inspires you? Answer: (Macy): Definitely Mom! She is very giving and helpful, and she is the one who really let me help. When I had this idea, she was the one who said "let's do it!" I am so grateful for her because she is so sweet and an amazing mom, and I want to be like that too. (Tucker): That's a hard question! There are so many people who inspire me. But the people who inspire me most are the people we get to help. Sometimes we get to meet the people we are helping, and to see them so happy and grateful for what we are giving, it really motivates us to keep doing what we are doing. Question: What are you currently working on? How can we get involved? Answer: The Provision Project has drives all the time! We try and do a new one every month, but the ones that we have done repeatedly and will continue to take donations for all the time are The Grace House and Shower Power of Mississippi. These organizations have a steady stream of new people they are helping all the time, and the needs never end. We have a website which takes you to our Facebook page where you can keep up with the latest happenings and donation drives: www.theprovisionproject.com MEET TUCKER AND MACY: When The Provision Project began, Tucker was 9 years old and Macy was 7 years old. Tucker is now 11 years old and is a 6th grader at MRA. He plays baseball and basketball and has his own podcast called "Tuesdays with Tucker" that can be found on Spotify and Pocketcasts. Macy is now 9 years old (10 in September) and is a 4th grader at MRA. She takes gymnastics and is quite the tumbler! She also loves animals and plans to become a veterinarian who also owns a pet spa. LIFE BETWEEN THE LEVEES: AMERICA'S RIVERBOAT PILOTS It comes as no surprise that Mississippi is full of talent in all arenas, and that especially holds true when it comes to author, photographer and artist, Melody Golding. Her resume is impressive to say the least and her photographs have been displayed in universities, colleges and museums across the United States. Melody now has three published books. Her first two books were Katrina; Mississippi Women Remember, and Panther Tract; Wild Boar Hunting in the Mississippi Delta.
Melody’s latest book, Life Between the Levees, released in spring 2019 and is truly exceptional. It’s a chronicle of life on the river told from a decade of personal interviews that she conducted of men and women who have worked and lived on the “brown water”. The stories cover all walks of life, from pilots born in 1917 to pilots born in 1987. Reading the differences, obstacles, transitions, and love of the river that these men and women have will give you a new found appreciation. Quoted directly from the book and the pilots themselves, “I hate her when I’m with her, and I miss her when I’m gone.” Melody says, "I try to capture in my work a sense not only of timelessness but also of grace. To convey an observance of order out of the usual chaos of visual forms. God has given me this gift to share what I see in this world both as a patient and ardent observer, and as a participant in what I see, with the camera being the conduit of expression in my photography. For me, photography is a visual communication that is an adventure absolutely fueled by relentless challenge. When the photography and adventure become one, the experience is exponential." What sets your soul on fire? Who do you spend time with that brings out the best in you? Where do you go that "fills your cup"? As we mature, we learn how important self-care can be to our well-being. It is necessary that we focus on the integrative aspects of our mental, physical and emotional health. It is common in our culture to wait until something is wrong or there is a physical problem to invest in self-care. This can lead us to treat symptoms of our health rather than causes. When we nurture our mind, body, and spirit collectively out whole health and happiness improve. Mental health also includes emotional changes like depression, irritability and anxiety. These emotional changes can be related to life stressors, past events or hormone imbalances. These imbalances can lead to the onset or excessive "brain fog", lack of concentration or fatigue. It is important to discuss these issues with your women's health care provider. You can have your hormones evaluated for imbalances and discuss possible treatment options to optimize your hormones. We can nurture our mental well-being with continuing education, brain games, reading or traveling. We can also "turn off" and rest our busy minds with meditation, prayer and exercise. Some of benefit from talk therapy with a trained therapist, family member or close friend. Our bodies are ever changing and require balanced nutrition and exercise to enhance their prime function. Vitamin deficiencies can also lead to excessive fatigue. These deficiencies can also be tested and restored with proper nutrition or supplementation if indicated. Nutritional health includes a well-balanced diet that provides our bodies with the energy that we need without leading to increased weight gain or fatigue. Take the time to discuss your diet with your women's health provider to determine which foods and/or supplements are best for you based on any allergies or intolerances. Exercising three to four times weekly for a minimum of 45 minutes is suggested for heart health, weight, and stress management. Our bodies require physical exercise to function at their peak performance. Exercised like walking, yoga, and pilates can help improve mobility, strength and bone density. We should also take time for preventative physical wellness like yearly gynecological exams and mammograms when indicated. These routine screenings can prevent most chronic illnesses with early detection. We can also nurture our spirit by surrounding ourselves with love and others that lift us up. We can invest in our community and church with our gifts and talents. The rewards of a spiritual community are continous and can bring immeasurable joy not only to yourself but to those around you. Take time to take care of yourself, you deserve it. Written by Valley Hildebrand, NP - BC
